And now, it’s dog food. As if things weren’t ruff enough already. Here’s what you need to know about the latest dog food recall.

Torri Donley

Everyone already knows about Chef’s Table, Great British Bake Off, My Million Pound Menu, Ugly Delicious, Salt Fat Acid Heat, the movie Julie & Julia and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Street Food: Asia. Additionally, there are a large number of cooking shows, documentaries about chefs, and countless Japanese and Korean dramas that combine romance with food; but the list below flags up lesser-known gems you might have missed … and Big Night. Already a cult classic, this much-loved movie arrived, inexplicably on April Fool’s Day, like an unexpected gift; despite being well-known it’s been included because no food viewing list can be complete without it.

The Best Food Dehydrators Ranked by Value, Use, and Storage

Torri Donley

Dehydrating food is a tried and true preservation method. It works by drawing moisture out of food, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. When dried properly, food can last indefinitely, which is one reason dehydrated food makes a great on-the-go snack. Dehydration is also good for preserving bulk items, like herbs from your garden or mangoes you stocked up on when they were on sale, and since dehydrating intensifies the flavor of fresh food, dried herbs will taste stronger (perfect for seasoning steak), and fruits sweeter. While most foods can be dehydrated the old fashioned way (hang out in the sun on a hot, dry day, or place in a cool, dry area), dehydrators work quicker and provide a more controlled environment.

In our Kitchen Appliance Lab, we tested nine different dehydrators from leading brands of all different sizes, shapes, and styles. We rated performance on evenness and how quickly

sweet treats from a home baker who has trained in a Michelin-starred restaurant

Torri Donley

Home Sweet Home is a column dedicated to the talented people baking up a storm at home.

As a pastry chef, Melissa Ong has quite the colourful resume. She has clocked stints in top eateries in Singapore and around the world – for some three years, Melissa trained in the kitchens of the now-closed Restaurant André, Whitegrass, and even one-Michelin-starred Ralae in Copenhagen. While equally adept at using both the stove and the oven, Melissa quickly found out that her passion lies with creating sweet treats and bakes. “I personally feel that pastry-making is more intricate, and requires a higher level of precision,” she shares. “While physically tiring, I feel truly happy when baking.”

Unfortunately, with the ongoing global pandemic, Melissa’s full-time job was affected. But a desire to continue doing what she loved fuelled the resilient baker to kickstart her own home-based business. Without the commitments of being tied

Torri Donley

The tenets of Ghetto Gastro are as follows: Be the catalyst. Empower the community. And “vibes.” For Jon Gray, one-third of the Bronx food collective, it’s simple: “We’re storytellers. We use food and experiences around food history to tell stories about culture and life.”

Along with cofounders Lester Walker and Pierre Serrao, Gray spoke during the opening night of WIRED25 about the importance of food justice, changing value systems around cooking, and the future of the culinary world in underrepresented communities. The WIRED25 honorees—part of a group of change-makers across tech, entertainment, and media—were joined by the restaurateur Gabriela Cámara, of the famed eateries Contramar (Mexico City) and Cala (San Francisco).
