Bojangles, known for its fried chicken and biscuits, is taking on another Southern staple: barbecue.
The restaurant chain announced it will offer pulled pork on an expanded menu starting Tuesday.
The hickory-smoked barbecue, new to restaurants in most areas, can be served on sandwiches, dinner plates or as a complement to its Family Meal, Bojangles said in a news release.
“Born and raised in North Carolina, we at Bojangles know Southern home-cooking like the back of our hand, and these hands have been busy smoking up the best barbecue in town,” chef Marshall Scarborough said in the release.
Bojangles describes the menu option as “Carolina-style, pulled-pork BBQ that is equal parts vinegar tangy and slow-cooked smoky.”
Restaurants are rolling out the barbecue ahead of National Pulled Pork Day, which is Oct. 12. That’s when customers can expect to see “some fun” on Bojangles’ social media pages, according to the chain.
For those who can’t get enough pork, the restaurant is also bringing back a popular sandwich.
“The savory Pork Chop Griller Biscuit is marinated in a zesty dry-rub seasoning, bringing more tangy Southern flair to the pork palooza,” Bojangles said.
It’s not the first time Bojangles has tried its hand at barbecue. Participating restaurants had already served pulled pork, available on sandwiches and in limited-time bowls, The Charlotte Observer reported in 2016.
Some Twitter users were in favor of the expanded pulled pork offering, while others didn’t seem to be on board.
“They did just announce the return of pulled pork to the menu … makes me hungry,” one person wrote.
Another social media user asked: “There’s a National day for the worst meat?”
Bojangles started in Charlotte more than 40 years ago and has expanded to about 750 restaurants across 11 states, according to the chain.
