BE it a quick day trip or a multi-day trek, meal planning is important so that your trip does not become an outdoor torture feast.
Meals that are nourishing and enjoyable after a long day on the trail are obviously the best choice but weight, portability and preparation time need to be taken into consideration too.
Outdoor meal choices in Malaysia have come a long way from the days of instant noodles, rice and canned sardines. So, here are five meal ideas for your next trekking adventure.
1. INSTANT PASTA
Inexpensive, lightweight and easy to prepare in the outdoors, instant ramen or noodles such as has long been a staple for hiking and trekking trips. But now, hikers can enjoy pasta meals in the outdoors.
Introduced by Nestlé Malaysia last year are Pazzta, a quick-cook pasta made with 100% semolina wheat. With a cooking time of only five minutes and weighing 70grams per packet, Maggi Pazzta comes in two choices of Cheese Macaroni and Mushroom Penne.
Normal bread loaf tends to get squashed into mush when packed inside a hiking bag. This makes flatbreads or wraps are more suitable for outdoor trips. Packed in a resealable package, ready to eat Gardenia’s roll-up wrap or Mission’s wrap is a versatile choice. Spread with jam or peanut butter for breakfast at the campsite or tuna for a light lunch while resting on the trail, the roll-up wrap makes for a filling treat and is available in normal wholemeal and garlic.
3. RATION BARS
