Since its recent opening, Smoke on the Water BBQ & Catering owner Nick Hartig has been getting to work at 4:30 and 5 a.m.
He said that’s what he needs to do to make sure the food he offers is fresh. It also requires him to work 12 to 14-hour days, “but it’s the only way you get the best product.”
“You can’t rush the smoking process,” Hartig said.
Smoke on the Water BBQ & Catering is a rock ‘n’ roll themed barbecue restaurant at 3954 24th Ave., formerly Franchesca’s Family Dining.
Hartig signed the lease for the location in July and has been working on opening it since.
“This is exactly what I envisioned,” he said, looking around the restaurant Wednesday at the rock ‘n’ roll posters and memorabilia hanging on the walls.
The restaurant is open noon to 8 pm. Wednesday through Sunday and specializes in quality smoked meats, handcrafted burgers and more.
Menu items include:
- The Jumpin’ Jack burger, with sautéed jalapeños, thick cut Applewood smoked bacon, pepper jack cheese and jalapeño cream cheese on a brioche bun.
- The 2fer which includes pulled pork, smoked pulled chicken, mac and cheese, and cornbread.
- The White Cheddar BBQ Nachos on house made chips topped with pulled pork, fresh pico de gallo, lettuce and more.
Port Huron resident Jeff Smerer, who lives near the restaurant and wanted to check it out, has had the Jumpin’ Jack and said it tasted amazing. The ribs and fries were also on point, he said in a written message.
It was “just the right amount of smoke and you could still taste the meat,” he said.
Smerer said the staff at the restaurant is great, the décor is cool and the restaurant has great sauces, that make it hard to just pick one. He would encourage people to check out the restaurant, adding “them local people make amazing food.”
Hartig is working on getting a beer and wine license and the restaurant offers dine-in, delivery, curbside pickup and catering services. The restaurant caters events with 50 to 500 people, he said.
He said if people are looking for something unique and different to come and try the restaurant, they won’t be disappointed. And if they’re still afraid to eat out with the pandemic, the restaurant can deliver the food to them.
“We’re getting better every day,” Hartig said.
