Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith recently made headlines when they sat down on Red Table Talk to discuss reports that Jada had a relationship with musician August Alsina during their marriage. Shortly after the show went live, the word “entanglement” (which was what Jada said she had with August) was everywhere, as were memes showing Will appearing emotional. But now the couple is setting the record straight about the latter, saying that the problem was actually too much coffee and a late night shoot.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith said that he wasn’t crying in their viral “Red Table Talk” but he just looked it because he was dehydrated from coffee and tired.

A new YouTube video on Will’s channel begins with both Will and Jada cracking up about the jokes that sprang up online following their Red Table Talk episode; Jada said that Will didn’t look that way because he was emotional. “He doesn’t cry. He wasn’t crying,” she said. Will gave a bit more context to his appearance while on the show, explaining that people often think he’s crying even when he isn’t.

“I’m not sad a lot,” he said. “I think because I drink so much coffee, I get dehydrated and it makes my eyes water. People think I’m crying all the time.”

“No, it was midnight, we were shooting at midnight because we were trying to rush and go to the airport in the morning,” Will continued while laughing with Jada: “I said ‘reshoot it’ but it played out. Everyone is like ‘Poor Will.'”

A few of the Smith’s family’s favorite memes of Will’s “sad” face played on the screen with appropriately emotional music behind it. I guess let that be a lesson to us all…stay hydrated!
